Captain’s Briefing
Friends and supporters —
We understand your inbox is filled with COVID-19 updates and information, so below is a quick statement about our efforts in combating the virus, and then lots of positive updates about our last three months in the Bahamas.
INFO ON HEALTH AND SAFETY ABOARD THE SHIP REGARDING COVID-19
The M/V Pacific Hope is STILL IN THE BAHAMAS and STILL HELPING those in need. On March 11, as the World Health Organization announced the official news of a pandemic, we also learned that most NGOs (non-governmental organizations) had left their outreach locations across the globe. On March 15, the first confirmed case of COVID-19 appeared in Nassau, and the Bahamian government reached out to us for help. We feel called to stay and do what we do best — serve with confidence and action.
For the past three weeks, we have taken every precaution and followed every recommendation from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The ship is sanitized and disinfected from top to bottom, cabin inspections occur on a daily basis, and all crew members are following WHO/CDC personal hygiene practices. Every person on-board completes a health questionnaire which is submitted to the CDC, and personal protective equipment (PPE), including N95 masks, are available for each person in case of a suspected infection. Hand sanitizer dispensers are located in every common area and hallway, and our medical personnel has procedures in place for suspected infection: CDC Maritime Quarantine Info
Above all, the staff and crew onboard M/V Pacific Hope are serving on a voluntary basis – and we value their decision. Daily updates from the Bahamian health authority, WHO and CDC are shared regularly with the entire crew, as well as the ongoing risks involved with this pandemic.
VOLUNTEER GROUPS
We have suspended group travel to the ship until May. With prayer and diligence, we will assess the ongoing pandemic and allow large groups back on the ship once international travel is deemed safe for the masses.
A hopeful reminder—as Christians, we want to be prudent but not fearful. It’s times like these that we have the opportunity to lead by faith in a world run by fear. “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind.” - 2 Timothy 1:7
OUR WORK IN THE BAHAMAS SINCE JAN 2020:
- Pacific Hope hosted 7 church and mission teams, including the Christ Church Anglican from Midland, Texas.
- Our teams have rebuilt 26 rooftops, valued at close to $200,000 worth of aid.
- The ship relocated from the island of Little Grand Cay to Grand Bahama.
- We partnered with World Hope International for many of our efforts in Grand Bahama.
- Pacific Hope hosted 4 community BBQs with a total attendance of 400+ people! Face painting, games and Bible education are fun activities at each event.
- 129 volunteers and crew members have come aboard M/V Pacific Hope to serve the people of the Bahamas. The year is off to a great start!
UPDATES TO THE SHIP:
- Ship showers are being remodeled and improvements will allow for three new stalls.
- The aft is being remodeled to create space for refrigeration and freezer storage for the housing of large quantities of food when we’re located in isolated places.
- Our engineering team is working on maintenance and repairs after being anchored for four months.
- Two of our crew members completed firefighting training at MPT to stay up-to-date on cutting edge techniques to ensure the safety of the ship.
CREW & STAFF NEWS
Abby Pennington from Vero Beach Florida is our new Medical Coordinator! She recently left her job as an ICU nurse to work full time in medical missions. We’re delighted to have her on board M/V Pacific Hope as we gear up for our upcoming medical outreach.
ON THE HORIZON
Some of you might’ve heard the news about another ship in the works. The rumors are true! Pacific Hope Global is acquiring the YWAM ship, Next Wave. We are full steam ahead with the refit and will ultimately sail the 138-foot vessel from Turkey to the Caribbean to begin our very own Divemaster DTS program. We are excited about the new opportunities and adventures that Next Wave will bring to our organization and we will keep you posted with updates as they happen.
"Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken." — Psalm 62:6
Of course, none of our efforts or progress can happen without your prayers and support. Your financial donations are what enable the success of our organization.
If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to reach out: volunteer@marinereachglobal.org.
As our prayers are with you and your family during this tumultuous time in our world, we ask for your prayers as we continue to do the Lord’s work in the Bahamas.
Sincerely,
Captain Marvin
